RECOMMENDED OLYMPUS FELLOWSHIP 2017/2018

Lilly Lulay, Nadja Bournonville and Thomas Albdorf

A cooperation of Olympus with the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt, the Foam Photography Museum Amsterdam and the House of Photographie / Deichtorhallen Hamburg

recommended is the title of the fellowship that Olympus has initiated in cooperation with the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt (FFF), the House of Photography/Deichtorhallen Hamburg and the Foam Photography Museum Amsterdam. Beginning in 2017 it was awarded to three highly promising young photographers. Each recipient of the award receives financial support in the form of €10.000 for a photography project and one-year long coaching by a curator of the participating institutions. FFF curator Celina Lunsford will advise and support the art photographer Lilly Lulay (*1985 in Frankfurt am Main) during the development and implementation of an artistic project.

Lilly Lulay studied at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach and at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux. In her work she investigates photography as the technique that depicts an integral part of daily life, as well as the influence that the photographic medium has on the social behavior and mechanism of the individual and collective perception.

"In selecting the artist Lilly Lulay, we were fascinated with her experimental approach and her enduring approach of observation", Celina Lunsford explains the decision of the recommended Jury. "Lulay creates photographs of specific locations or identities and expands them into sculptures, collages and installations. Her work examines the relationship of society to history and visual codes of the collective memory."

The other two recipients of the first recommended year fellowships are Thomas Albdorf (*1983 in Linz/Austria) and Nadja Bournonville (*1983 in Vimmerby, Sweden). Albdorf will be supported and advised by Hinde Haest, curator of Foam Amsterdam; Bournonville by Ingo Taubhorn, curator at Deichtorhallen.

In the coming months all three recipients will develop a photographic project supported in the form of workshops and individual meetings by the curators. In January 2018 these institutions will present the results. Following these presentations, a joint exhibition is planned beginning in Hamburg during the Triennale der Photographie Hamburg, exhibitions follow at Foam and FFF.

The goal of the fellowship and the four partners is the advancement of contemporary photography in the artistic sector. These young photographers receive effective support at a crucial point in their careers.  "We are happy that with recommended our main FFF sponsor Olympus has created a further opportunity for us to mentor to younger talents", said Celina Lunsford.
