HANS-MICHAEL KOETZLE “REDEN WIR ÜBER FOTOGRAFIE”

As an author and curator, photo historian Hans-Michael Koetzle draws on numerous encounters and conversations with the great personalities of photography. His latest book “Reden wir über Fotografie” (Let's Talk About Photography) brings together essays and interviews from four decades - with Ellen Auerbach, Aenne Biermann, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Helen Gee, Saul Leiter, F.C. Gundlach, Will McBride, René Burri, Martin Parr, and many others. In a dialogue with Sabine Königs (Fotografie Forum Frankfurt), Hans-Michael Koetzle follows his title and talks about his passion for photography, the creative people behind the camera and Paris as a place of longing.


The reader Reden wir über Fotografie, published in 2022 and edited by Andreas J. Hirsch, contains essays and interviews by Hans-Michael Koetzle as well as meticulous archive research, with which the renowned German photography expert always keeps an eye on the contemporary historical background and cultural-historical context. “Hans-Michael Koetzle, whose primary concern in addition to curating has always been writing about photography, opens up for us the history and present of photography as a multifaceted medium in transition.” reads the publisher's press release.

Hans-Michael Koetzle (*1953 in Ulm) studied German and history and has worked for decades as a curator and publicist specialising in photography. He has organised exhibitions on photography at the Ulm University of Art and Design (1991), twen (1995), Paris in the photo book (2011), the cultural history of the Leica (2014) and the work of graphic designer Willy Fleckhaus (2017). He has also realised retrospectives, e.g. on René Burri, F.C. Gundlach and Paul Wolff & Tritschler, as well as numerous essays. His Lexikon der Fotografen (2002) and the anthology Photo Icons (2003) have long since become standard works, as have his books Eyes on Paris - Paris im Fotobuch 1890 bis heute and Augen auf! - 100 Jahre Leica. 
From 1996 to 2007
, Koetzle was editor-in-chief of Leica World magazine. In 2022, he received the Cultural Award of the German Photographic Society (DGPh). He lives in Munich.


Publisher Andreas J. Hirsch (*1961, Vienna) worked as an author, artistic photographer and curator after studying law.
