ANN MANDELBAUM “MATTER”

Friday, November 04, 2022, 6 pm

Location: Fotografie Forum Frankfurt, 2nd floor

Focusing on process rather than product, the American photographer Ann Mandelbaum will share the work she has produced during the last 35 years. The emphasis will be on the relationships between the ongoing series, all of which offer worlds not usually witnessed. In attempting to subvert reality, Mandelbaum initially employed the use of solarization and multiple exposure in the darkroom. The work which followed, interfacing with digital layers, manifests the huge shift that has taken place between the analogue and digital worlds.

On the occasion of her lecture at the FFF ACADEMY, Ann Mandelbaum presents her new monograph “Matter”. The book brings together both her analogue black-and-white photographs from 1990–2000 and her digital colour photographs from 2007 to the present. None of the approximately 100 works has been exhibited or published before. Mandelbaum's varied imagery spans the history of the photographic medium, which she expands into an ambiguous and sensual language through techniques of sculpture, collage, and drawing.
