Abe Frajndlich in dialogue with author Peter Stephan Jungk

As part of the exhibition ABE FRAJNDLICH. CHAMELEON, photographer Abe Frajndlich is at FFF for three special events.

A performance with the Japanese Butoh dancer Minami Azu (*1978, Japan) will start in the FFF on Friday, September 8, 6 pm.

Frajndlich’s fascination with Butoh, a dance-theatre originating in Japan during the 1950s postwar period was sparked by his visits to Minor White. In 2008 Frajndlich spontaneously photographed the Japanese Butoh dancer Minami Azu performing on the NYC subway. The photographer later traveled to Japan, where he took portraits of Nobuyoshi Araki and Kishin Shinoyama and met up with Minami to make more photographs. Despite or because of the language barriers, a fruitful collaboration has developed between Minami and Abe throughout the years, based on location and concepts determined by both artists.

On the occasion of Minami Azu’s Butoh performance the FFF is offering two special edition prints by the American photographer Abe Frajndlich for purchase. The motifs are two portraits of Minami Azu (*1978, Japan) and Rosebud »Rosie« Conway (1949–1978, USA). Both performance artists inspired Frajndlich at different times in his career; in the current retrospective ABE FRAJNDLICH. CHAMELEON they are united in the work series “2Muse”. The archival ink jet prints (20 x 28 cm) are dated and signed by the artist and can be purchased at FFF. Edition of 12 each. All proceeds go to the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt and Minami Azu.
