Developing narratives and realizing them with photograpic means – that is what this FFF AKADEMIE workshop with Nhu Xuan Hua is all about. The exhibiting artist Nhu Xuan Hua will work closely with participants to create narratives. Bringing subjectivity to the focus and keeping the narrative enticing will be the venture of these two days.

Through her own biography Nhu Xuan Hua’s extracts elements to give unique form to her fashion and editorial photographs. The essential ingredient of a narrative structure being the substance. She explores memories, nuances of different cultures to delve into her own identity to draw her magical, explorative installations of objects and photographs. Through exchanges of stories between the participants, visual references, writings and personal notes she will show the importance of one’s narrative and how those tools can give birth to original photographs.

She will teach participants the best strategies to use, to observe, research and build means of expression in order to reveal the connections that will create a vessel that carries subtil meanings in the images.

Nhu Xuan Hua is a French-Vietnamese photographic artist based in Paris, working between Paris and London and making commissions worldwide.

She studied art history and cinema before completing the photography course at the Auguste Renoir Technical school in Paris in 2011. A year later Nhu Xuan moved to London, where she lived and worked on both national and international commissions for large fashion companies such as Dior, Maison Margiela, Kenzo and Gucci.

Nhu Xuan moved back to Paris in 2021 and is exploring a more multidisciplinary story-telling practice in her fashion photography. She had her first solo show Hug of a swan at Huis Marseille, Museum for Photography in Amsterdam (NL) as an overview, mixing fashion and autonomous works from the past 6 years, enlightening her searching process on displacement of memories and Vietnamese heritage.

Her first publication Tropism, Consequences of a displaced Memory was published by Area Books. Based on archival pictures from her family, the digital intervention interprets these memories through a new angle, exploring the effect of dissipation generated by time passing and driven by the forces of an inherited memory.
