Long and thoughtful observation.

A calm, lengthy, intent consideration.

Meditation on spiritual matters.

This workshop is about learning to be present in the moment and exploring your inner photographic view. In my portrait work I explore the relations between the inside and the outside. How do the features of a face translate to inner feelings and moods? How does the face tells us stories about the life of the person portrayed. This takes time to explore, and it is a non-verbal communication between the sitter and the portrait photographer.

In my other work on architecture, landscapes and objects I use the same working method as in my portraiture.

Torben Eskerod, born in 1960, was educated at Aalborg University (1980–86) and Aarhus School of Architecture and Fatamorgana School of Photography in Copenhagen (1988–91). Eskerod’s projects find common ground in his interest for contemplation and spirituality. He is especially known for his portraits series like Equivalence (1995), Cassadaga (2000), Life and Death Masks (2001), Friends and Strangers (2006) and Campo Verano (2008). His approach to spiritual expression is further explored in the series Marselis (2012) and Can Lis (2013).

Monographs of Eskerod’s work have been published such as Ansigter/Faces (Forlaget Rhodos, 1997) in cooperation with the Danish Ministry of Culture photographic book prize, Register (Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, 2001) and Campo Verano (Kehrer Verlag, 2008).

Several projects with his architectural photographs and portraits have appeared in the publications Statens Museum for Kunst (Arkitektens Forlag, 1998), Vita (University of California Press, 2005), The Club (Rönnells, 2008), Will to Live (Princeton University Press, 2009), Frederik VIIIs palæ (Aristo, 2010), Kunst på Borgen (Permild & Rosengreen, 2013) and Anton Rosen (Forlaget Vandkunsten, 2013).

Torben Eskerod’s photographs have been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery, London; the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh; Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh; Museum of National History, Denmark; Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen; Blue Sky Gallery, Portland; and Galleri KANT, Copenhagen. He has received several awards and grants and is represented in a wide range of private and public collections such as The National Museum of Photography, Denmark and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas.
