To develop the power of a story to its fullest, one must first make a selection of images and devise their sequence. How this process works and how it is influenced by different digital platforms is the topic of the lecture by picture editor Winifred Chiocchia. By using concrete examples, the audience will gain a detailed insight into her photographic selection processes and, moreover, into the various forms of close cooperation with photographers. The speaker will also address choosing images in the context of making exhibitions, when applying for awards or in the production of various media and communication channels–from print and online magazines to social media platforms and daily newspapers.

The lecture will be held in German.

Born 1985 in Turin, Italy, Winifred Chiocchia studied photography and visual arts at the Istituto Europeo di Design and then at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem specializing in picture-editing and reportage-photography. After graduating, she first worked as a photojournalist and sports photographer. She received a scholarship in 2016 to take part in the renowned Eddie Adams Workshop in New York; subsequently she complete a one-year course at the Ostkreuzschule in Berlin for her training as a picture editor. Chiocchia has also edited the archives of the award-winning photographers Fabio Bucciarelli and Lorenzo Tugnoli and curated exhibitions from their works. As a free-lancer she has worked as a picture editor for the Ostkreuz photo agency, for Studio Stauss, Berlin and for the magazine Mare – die Zeitschrift der Meere. Since 2019 she is the picture editor of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
