In the workshop “A Portrait Story”, Hanne van der Woude will re-act first hand with the participants through her work and discuss the philosophy behind her projects. In doing so she will coach the photographers on how to make small (portrait) stories on location. Often Hanne van der Woude meets her subjects on the street, such as when she met Ben, whose life she followed with her camera for years resulting in the project Emmy’s World

How does one approach the subject and the surroundings where the people live?

Observing behavior is an important part of her process. The focus in this workshop will be on learning how to develop an awareness of environments, as well as aesthetic consciousness. Tips about flash photography on location are also part of the workshop.

Hanne van der Woude (*1982) studied at ArtEZ, the School of Arts in Arnhem (NL), where she lives and works today as a photographer. After her studies, she devoted several years to independent projects, for example, MC1R – Natural Red Hair (2005–2008) and Emmy’s World (2009–2015).
She has had solo exhibitions at The Hague Museum of Photography, (2008), Huis Marseille, Museum for Photography, Amsterdam (2015) and at the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt (2016). Her work has also been exhibited at Musée de l'Élysée in Lausanne (2008), Rencontres International de la Photographie en Gaspésie in Gaspésie (2016) and Kyotographie, International Photography Festival in Kyoto (2017) and the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum (2018).
