In cooperation with the Freunde des MMK, the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt (FFF) presents a rare screening of “Barbara Klemm. Bilder” (1994), directed by Otto Schweitzer. This one-hour documentary provides an in-depth look at the work and approach of photographer Barbara Klemm.


The film traces the early career of Barbara Klemm as a photographic assistant, follows her travels, and offers insights into her darkroom practice. Jean-Christophe Ammann, former director of the MMK, offers commentary on Klemm’s photography, emphasizing the compositional precision of her images. The result is a cinematic portrait of a major figure in German photography.


Barbara Klemm will attend the screening. A conversation with the artist will follow. The evening concludes with a reception in the cinema foyer.

Barbara Klemm (*1939 in Münster, Germany) began working for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in 1959 and became a full-time photographer for them 1970 until 2005. Her main subjects have always been political and cultural themes. Barbara Klemm is a member of the Academy of Arts Berlin-Brandenburg and she had an honorary Professorship from the Hochschule Darmstadt for 20 years.
Her work has been exhibited in numerous museums and institutions world-wide. She is the recipient of such awards as the Dr. Erich Salomon Prize, the Hugo Erfurth Prize, the Maria Sibylla Merian Award for women artists in the State of Hessen, as well as the Max Beckmann Award. Fotografie Forum Frankfurt has shown the photographers work on many occaisions, e.g. “Barbara Klemm. Photographs 1968–1984” (1984); ”“Barbara Klemm. Portraits of Artist and Street Scenes” (2004).
