As part of the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt’s academy program, award-winning photographer Simon Norfolk will speak about his work in the field of landscape and night photography.

The lecture will offer insights into Norfolk’s approach to light, exposure, and composition, as well as his on-location photographic practice.

In addition to technical and conceptual aspects, Norfolk will present key stages of his career and selected projects that reflect his ongoing engagement with landscape, history, and structures of power.

The lecture takes place on the evening before the two-day workshop with Simon Norfolk.

Simon Norfolk was born in 1963 in Lagos, Nigeria, and grew up in England. After studying documentary photography at the University of Wales, Newport, he worked as a photojournalist. Since 1994, he has focused on landscape photography, particularly exploring themes of battlefields, war, and crisis zones.

His work has received numerous awards, including the Prix Pictet Commission (2012) and the Prix Dialogue at the Les Rencontres d’Arles Festival (2005). Simon has won two World Press Photo Awards, three Sony World Photography Awards, was shortlisted for the Deutsche Bourse Prize and won a Prix Pictet Commission. He was the first British photographer to have a solo show at Tate Modern.

He shot ten years worth of assignments for the New York Times Magazine and is now a National Geographic photographer.

He receives a huge through-following from social media postings. Norfolk has published four monographs, including Afghanistan: Chronotopia (2002) and Bleed(2005, about the war in Bosnia). His work is part of major international collections, such as The Getty Museum (Los Angeles), Tate Modern (London), and the Art Collection Deutsche Börse (Frankfurt am Main). Simon Norfolk currently lives in Brighton, UK.
