As part of its FFFACADEMY programme, the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt invites participants to a special two-day workshop with internationally renowned documentary and landscape photographer Simon Norfolk. Known for his striking images of war zones and military infrastructure, Norfolk combines technical precision with strong political narratives.

The workshop offers both theoretical foundations and practical exercises in landscape and night photography, with a focus on lighting and composition. Image reviews and group critiques complete the programme.

For over twenty years, Simon Norfolk has explored the concept of the "battlefield" in all its forms – from actual war zones to symbols of military power. His work traces the marks left by conflict on the landscape and provokes deep reflection.

In addition to the workshop, Simon Norfolk will give a public lecture at the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt on November 7, 2025.

Simon Norfolk was born in 1963 in Lagos, Nigeria, and grew up in England. After studying documentary photography at the University of Wales, Newport, he worked as a photojournalist. Since 1994, he has focused on landscape photography, particularly exploring themes of battlefields, war, and crisis zones.

His work has received numerous awards, including the Prix Pictet Commission (2012) and the Prix Dialogue at the Les Rencontres d’Arles Festival (2005). Simon has won two World Press Photo Awards, three Sony World Photography Awards, was shortlisted for the Deutsche Bourse Prize and won a Prix Pictet Commission. He was the first British photographer to have a solo show at Tate Modern.

He shot ten years worth of assignments for the New York Times Magazine and is now a National Geographic photographer.

He receives a huge through-following from social media postings. Norfolk has published four monographs, including Afghanistan: Chronotopia (2002) and Bleed(2005, about the war in Bosnia). His work is part of major international collections, such as The Getty Museum (Los Angeles), Tate Modern (London), and the Art Collection Deutsche Börse (Frankfurt am Main). Simon Norfolk currently lives in Brighton, UK.

Over a long career Simon Norfolk has…

- Flown a helicopter into an active volcano (looking for bears) and once had to jump off a cruise ship;

- Shot two seconds of an Austin Powers movie; once punched a High Court judge and has a photograph in the fictional art collection of Bobby Axelrod in the TV show ‘Billions;’

- Has slept in a lighthouse, a shipping container, a wigwam and once in a hotel with no roof;
